Articles - General - Otakuworks FAQ and Requirements - Windows: Changing Your Resolution
If you are viewing OtakuWorks.com and one page is bigger than your monitor, that probably means your resolution is relatively low. This guide has been created to explain how to change your computer's resolution, which generally should make it easier to use the computer.

  • Minimize your programs so that your desktop is visible

  • Right mouse-click anywhere on your desktop and select 'Properties'

  • A window should pop up with some tabs at the top of it. One of them should say 'Settings.' Click it

  • You should now be presented with a picture of a monitor with a window open on it, below it saying the name of your monitor, and then below it having 'Screen resolution' on the left, and 'Color quality' on the right.

  • Under 'Screen resolution' you should see a little slider bar, with 'less' on the left hand side and 'more' on the right hand side. Below the slider it should say something like '800 by 600 pixels' or '1024 by 768 pixels', or other combinations of numbers. If you try sliding the slider, the number will go up or down.

  • Try sliding the bar all the way to the right

  • If you have a normal (non-widescreen) monitor, the text below should say something like '1280 by 1024 pixels' or '1024 by 768 pixels', if it is higher than that, reduce it so that it is at most 1280x1024

  • Click 'Apply', this may cause your screen to go black for a second, and if it stays like that, do not worry, it pops up a 'do you wish to keep this setting?' window, and if you don't say yes after 30 seconds, it'll revert back to your old resolution, no harm done

  • Things will appear smaller, however more will appear on your screen at a time. If you changed it to 1280 by 1024 and think that things appear just TOO small, try 1024 by 768. If that is still too small, try increasing your font size

  • Tinker around with those settings until you find something you like. Unless you have a very small monitor, 800 by 600 is probably not the resolution you want. Any other resolutions that are higher will of course seem 'bad' to you, however try using a higher resolution (maybe not the highest, that might be too drastic of a change, but 1024 by 768 is good) for about a week, see if you get used to it. If not, you can always change back!

What is a 'resolution'?
Your resolution is the amount of pixels on your screen. For example, with 800x600, your screen is 800 pixels wide, and 600 pixels tall. 1280x1024, it would be 1280 wide and 1024 tall, etc. By increasing the resolution, more fits on the screen. For example, with 800x600, there are 480,000 pixels being displayed. With 1280x1024, there are 1,310,720 pixels being displayed. Thus, more can 'fit' onto a monitor at 1280x1024 resolution than at 800x600.
